Atkinson’s Dive: A Triumphant Return to the Water

A veteran member of the squad, Atkinson aims to be a support system for the newcomers and younger students in the program, as she empathizes with their experiences and recognizes her ability to assist. 

“I don’t want the freshmen to feel discontent,” Atkinson expressed. “I wish for them not to feel anxious about anything. I would welcome someone approaching me with a question rather than keeping it to themselves.”

Training for the ongoing season commenced back in August, and Atkinson has ensured to foster transparent dialogue with her coaches regarding not only her physical fitness but also her mental health. 

“I have monthly discussions with the coaches to review my mental progress during training and assess my physical state,” Atkinson stated. “They assist and instill confidence in me. This is my final year, and I want to excel, and I believe it all begins with maintaining a positive mindset.”

In her final year with the Hokies, Atkinson has distinct ambitions for both herself and the team. She aspires not only to be a more vocal supporter from the sidelines but also to find herself on the NCAA podium alongside her relay teammates.  

“We’ve been so close each year; it would be incredible for the four of us to stand on the podium together,” Atkinson remarked. “It feels significantly different when you’re celebrating on the podium with your teammates, the girls you’ve partnered with in relays for years. They deserve a trophy individually or as a relay team, and I want to share that moment with them.”

Emma and the Hokies are set to compete at the ACC Championships in February, followed by the NCAA Championships in late March. After her tenure in the maroon and orange, Atkinson aims to pursue a career in collegiate athletics.
