Regarding his return to MSU and his team’s performance…

It felt a bit strange to be on the alternative side and come here to compete against one of my mentors. Clearly, it’s a venue that holds significant value for me, so it was unusual, but enjoyable. I’m proud of how my players battled, playing vigorously, although we committed a few too many turnovers and missed free throws. Aside from that, I was genuinely proud of our competitiveness.

 

On his team’s competitiveness…

That was my request to my team, to come in here and compete, and excel at the aspects that don’t require talent. Rebounding, sprinting back during transitions which is their strength. Many of our turnovers resulted in their transition points. The main issue that hindered us the most was the turnovers that denied us the opportunity to defend. When we forced them into our half-court defense, I felt we performed quite well.

 

On his view of this MSU squad…

I believe they possess an exceptional team. Coach Izzo and I conversed last week and I told him, this group reminds me of the 2005 team. Chris Hill, Shannon Brown, Maurice Ager, Paul Davis, Drew Neitzel, Kelvin Torbert, Alan Anderson, that lineup. They have considerable depth and they don’t lose anything when they bring in subs. I foresee them having a fantastic season. I believe their league is quite open and they have as strong a chance as anyone to accomplish something remarkable.

 

On how he readied to confront MSU…

I’m acquainted with their plays, and we incorporate some of their strategies. Our defense is notably similar. We both stress rebounding and place substantial emphasis on that element. My players were thoroughly prepared. We understood nearly every action they intended to execute and likewise, they were ready for us. The primary factor is that I feel they gradually wore us down as the game progressed, leading to our sloppiness and failure to close out effectively. Perhaps that explains our poor free-throw performance.

Regarding the enhancement of his three-point shooting…

If I’m open, I will take the shot. I am aiming to demonstrate to others that I can contribute more. I’ve been working with Coach Izzo, Coach (Thomas) Kelley, Coach Saddi (Washington), and Blake (Graduate Assistant Blake Lampman) who have instilled confidence in me to take those shots, and that’s exactly what I will do.

 

On stepping into a leadership position within the team…

I have just been emphasizing my vocal presence. These players trust me, and once I acknowledged my voice holds weight, I realized the need to leverage that as my teammates are receptive to me and I am reciprocating that attentiveness.

Concerning what motivated the team to surge late in the match…

They executed a few plays purely on effort, and we all must respond accordingly. That’s what we discussed, that we need to exert more effort, more energy, and that’s precisely what we accomplished tonight to launch a run.

 

On the significance of recalibrating after a victory…

It’s always preferable to learn from a victory rather than a defeat. There are several areas we need to enhance, turnovers being a major one as we had an excessive number today. However, it’s certainly better to gain insights from a win than from a loss.
