“Inmate Back Home: U.S. Transfers Guantanamo Detainee to Tunisia”

Guantanamo Bay prisoner Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi has been returned to Tunisia, as stated by the US Department of Defense.

Following a “thorough interagency evaluation process”, he was deemed suitable for transfer from the detention center, a press announcement indicated.

The Pentagon did not clarify whether Mr. Yazidi had admitted any wrongdoing.

Since its inception in 2002, the Guantanamo Bay detention center has been utilized to detain what the US refers to as captured unlawful combatants amid America’s “war on terror”.

The camp is situated within a US naval base complex in south-eastern Cuba.

Per an unverified report from the New York Times, Mr. Yazidi was never prosecuted and had been cleared for transfer over ten years ago,

The publication further noted he had been at Guantanamo Bay since the facility was initially established in 2002.

According to the Pentagon’s statement on Monday , 26 detainees are still held at Guantanamo Bay, of which 14 are eligible for transfer.

Earlier in December, the Pentagon revealed that the US had repatriated three additional detainees, as reported by the Associated Press news agency.

The camp was formed by the Bush administration to detain the most perilous suspects for interrogation and the prosecution of war crimes.

Debate has revolved around the duration of detention without charges and the implementation of interrogation methods.
