“Score Big: 3 Exciting Outdoor Game Concepts for the New Jersey Devils!”

One of the standout moments for the New Jersey Devils in 2024 was the Stadium Series triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers. The atmosphere at MetLife Stadium was electric as the Devils revealed precisely what they could achieve in front of the entire league. For many Devils supporters, that day became the highlight of the year, even amidst all the victories the Devils have secured this season. 

The Devils are likely to participate in future outdoor games due to the talents they have on their roster. Primarily, Jack Hughes will be in the spotlight for the league. As one of the biggest American stars in the league, playing in the vicinity of New York City will be alluring for the league. 

Yet, with MetLife eliminated from the possibilities, where else might the Devils hold an outdoor game? We attempt to think creatively to determine the Devils’ next venue. 

1. SHI Stadium
Piscataway, New Jersey

We begin with the venue recognized as the birthplace of college football. Sure, we know that Princeton and Rutgers didn’t technically play football in this stadium, but that match occurred just down the road. The Rutgers campus holds historical significance, and hosting an outdoor hockey game at SHI Stadium seems quite logical.

The stadium itself appears to be quite suitable for hockey. Unlike some collegiate stadiums that are excessively large, Rutgers’ venue offers excellent sightlines for everyone seated. It’s also located in Piscataway, nestled in the aptly named Middlesex County. This makes it quite convenient for individuals throughout the state to access the game. 

This is the clear selection, as it is the only other substantial stadium in the state of New Jersey. SHI Stadium has a seating capacity of 52,454. That number is sufficient for the NHL to deem this a considerable success. Would it constitute a Winter Classic? Likely not, but the NHL would joyfully host another Stadium Series between the Rangers and Devils here.
