Sony Promises Gradual Expansion of PS Portal Features: Exciting Updates on the Horizon!

Sony has reaffirmed that its handheld gaming apparatus PlayStation Portal will steadily enhance its features. One of the most significant updates released last month introduces cloud streaming capabilities to the device.

Sony will take “incremental steps” to enhance PS Portal’s functionalities

In a recent discussion with GameFile, Hiromi Wakai, Vice President of Product Management at Sony Interactive Entertainment, expressed that the rationale for the gradual enhancement of the PS Portal’s features is to guarantee players receive an optimal experience.

“PS Portal represented a new category of product for us, thus we aimed to be particularly cautious to ensure our users receive the best possible user experience,” stated Wakai. “We intend to maintain this methodology with PS Portal and implement incremental changes based on community feedback from the beta.”

The performance metrics of the streaming device appear to be crucial due to its user demographic. Wakai noted that owners of the portable streaming device generally engage with games more frequently than those who do not possess it.

“Users who have a PS Portal typically allocate more time to gaming in comparison to those who do not,” commented Wakai. “Naturally, it’s probable that individuals who buy a PS Portal were already more involved in gaming; however, our statistics indicate that PS Portal owners tend to invest more hours in gameplay compared to non-owners.”

In the same conversation, Sony noted that the usage of the device peaks around 9 p.m., which is an hour later than the peak usage time of the PS5. They believe gamers are transitioning their gaming sessions from the television to the handheld device instead of merely powering down the console and concluding their playtime.

The PS Portal was introduced a little over a year ago. While there were doubts initially, the device has achieved substantial success. According to PlayStation leader Hideaki Nishino, the sales of the device have been a “remarkable triumph” for the gaming corporation. When speaking with BBC, Nishino also mentioned, “We are continually investigating various possibilities for how players can engage with games.”
