Unveiling the Future: What Awaits the EU in 2025

As one year concludes and another begins, let’s look forward to what lies ahead in the EU for the next 12 months. 2025 is set to be another busy and demanding year for everyone. Domestically and internationally, there is a great deal to accomplish, while numerous significant milestones await to be celebrated throughout the year.

The EU will continue to play a vital role on the global front. We will unwaveringly support Ukraine amid Putin’s hostility and, with the help of the Ukraine Facility and our G7 loan, we are effectively addressing most of Ukraine’s funding shortfall for 2025. The Middle East will also demand our attention, as we anticipate enhancing our robust transatlantic ties with the US once its new leadership assumes office.

We have notable anniversaries to commemorate as well. It will mark 30 years since Austria, Finland, and Sweden became part of the EU. The Schuman declaration will be recognized for its 75th anniversary. On January 1, 2025, Bulgaria and Romania will fully integrate into Schengen, bolstering the Schengen area, which will also celebrate its 40^th jubilee.

Paving the way will be the European Parliament and Commission, which commenced their terms in 2024, along with the Council of the EU, under the rotating Presidencies of Poland and Denmark.

Within the Commission, the upcoming months will usher in various new initiatives aimed at enhancing the EU’s competitiveness, sustainability, defense, security, and digital innovation. Additionally, progress on the subsequent Multiannual Financial Framework (2028-2034) will be made in 2025.
