Wild Wonders: The Ultimate Naturalist Photography Experience with Gastineau Guiding

Naturalist Photography Guides at Gastineau Guiding lead intimate groups on excursions to Juneau’s highlights while striving to enhance their photography skills. Duties encompass a range of tasks from teaching guests on how to utilize their gear, to visually illustrating photography techniques, to clarifying the intricacies of the Mendenhall Glacier. This role necessitates a robust background in photography and excellent interpersonal abilities. Candidates should be adept at conveying photographic concepts such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, and composition methods to varying levels of expertise. Creating a media slideshow for educational purposes during the tour is essential.

As this tour operates both on land and at sea, you will engage in whale watching activities almost every day. A readiness to train as a naturalist and acquire Coast Guard crew certification is essential. Guides are also required to manage company vehicles (14-28 passengers) and provide support during other tours. Interpretive certification(s) are available.

Important: All newly hired guides are required to possess a Commercial Driving License or undergo training for their Class B or C Alaskan CDL. In-house training is available if the candidate fulfills age and driving record criteria. Guides must also hold CPR/First Aid certification. Compensation ranges from $18-$20 per hour once the CDL license is obtained.  

WHO WE’RE SEEKING:

All Gastineau Guiding tours are entirely guided, small group activities, leading guests off the typical path to locations less frequented by other companies. Small groups comprising between 6-20 guests facilitate better communication, personalized attention, and increased time spent off the bus and on the trails. This is why our staff members are not merely guides; they are naturalist interpreters.

We are in search of effective communicators who can uphold a professional demeanor and appearance while imparting their knowledge and enthusiasm for photography and the natural heritage of Southeast Alaska. Gastineau Guiding begins comprehensive training in mid-April, with the season concluding in late September. While full season availability is preferred, it is not obligatory.
