Similar to embarking on the simulator for the first time, there was a period of adaptation. The signage differing from that of the virtual track was particularly noticeable, as was the now very tangible sensation of speed. Much more than on the simulator, there is no room for complacency. Continuous concentration is essential at all moments. Ultimately, there is no reset option.

Nevertheless, we found ourselves swiftly implementing some of the insights we’d acquired from the simulator. For example, at Woodcote Corner (which is nearly two corners), we were braking twice on the simulator, but once we were on the track we began consolidating it into a single braking motion and refining our trajectory. This not only improved our speed but also enhanced the car’s stability.

Additionally, although we previously stated that the simulator is not entirely immersive, there were numerous beneficial resemblances between it and reality. The layout of the track felt nearly indistinguishable, and the speeds we achieved were comparable as well. Essentially, we could ascertain which gear we needed for certain curves, as well as an approximate speed we could navigate them at, before even setting foot on the track.

Both the virtual and actual M4 exhibited exceptionally responsive front-ends, offering substantial precision and grip. Their rear ends were also predictably stable, meaning that if you began to press the accelerator slightly too early in a turn, they would lose alignment in a gradual and manageable way. Overall, both M4s performed magnificently – we consider the real one a five-star performance vehicle, after all.

It is worth mentioning, however, that some simulated vehicles – sourced from the video game Assetto Corsa (which also features the model of Goodwood Circuit) – can vary in realism. For instance, due to the existence of a dedicated virtual racing league featuring Caterham Sevens, that particular car model is crafted to be extremely authentic. However, we are informed that not every model has received the same level of detail and care.
