A nearby Rockaway resident is organizing an event for collectors of all ages.
Robert “Bob” Groff is conducting his seventh Queens Culture Clash on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Knights of Columbus, situated at 333 Beach 90th St.
The gathering will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will showcase over 30 vendors offering sports and Pokemon cards, Funko Pops, classic toys, comics, and additional items. A Pokemon tournament is set to commence at noon. A 50/50 raffle will occur, with proceeds directed to Rockaway Beach Autism Families. Participants can also sample delightful Caribbean-inspired BBQ from Jase’s BBQ.
Groff, a principal in a public school, enjoys collecting sports cards in his spare time. While not at work, he manages 7 Inning Stretch Collectibles Rockaway, where he buys, sells, and exchanges sports collectible cards with interested buyers.
He initiated Queens Culture Clash in 2022 after realizing there were almost no venues in the Rockaways for collectors to convene. “The concept is that there’s virtually nothing in the Rockaway region focused on collecting. The nearest locations are a comic store in Lynbrook and Royal Collectibles in Forest Hills. There are simply no opportunities in the vicinity. I aspired to create a venue for the community to unite,” he remarked.
Groff noted that while sports cards are his main interest, he acknowledges that numerous individuals enjoy collecting Funko Pops, comics, and other collectibles. At the inaugural Queens Culture Clash, around 30 individuals attended, and he has since consistently attracted a growing audience. His latest event at Knights of Columbus in September saw over 235 participants and 32 vendors.
He emphasized that in-person collectible gatherings can foster a sense of community and provide greater clarity for buyers.
“A significant reason I initiated these events was due to eBay. For example, it has numerous fees, and you lack the opportunity to familiarize yourself with those you’re dealing with. Furthermore, because of COVID, our interactions diminished. However, this event emphasizes community, allowing you to meet more individuals from your locality,” Groff articulated.
Additionally, Groff mentioned that he seeks ways to give back to the local community by organizing charitable initiatives during the events he conducts. In prior instances, he has raised funds for Rise Rockaway, B.R.I.D.G.E. FEC, and Rockaway Beach Autism Families.
His role as a principal working alongside children with autism has motivated him to contribute proceeds to Rockaway Beach Autism Families for this occasion.
“Each day, I engage with families…that have kids who are autistic. “I have a strong dedication to assisting them,” Groff stated.
Groff mentioned that Queens Culture Clash serves as an inclusive community for children with autism interested in collectibles. “Numerous children with autism are fascinated by collecting items, so this is a venue where they are encouraged to join.”
Looking ahead, Groff aspires for this month’s event to surpass the success of earlier versions. “I’m aiming to attract over 250 attendees. My goal is to also foster the expansion of the community. I want a thriving collecting community to emerge in the Rockaway area.”
