The alteration in flavor and scent is a result of heightened levels of naturally occurring organic substances referred to as MIB (Methylisoborneol) in the raw water supply to Seqwater’s Mount Crosby Water Treatment Facility. These naturally developed compounds are elevated due to recent significant rainfall, followed by extremely warm weather conditions. 

Customers should start to observe the flavor and scent of their tap water gradually returning to normal within the coming days.

We assure residents that the treated water provided from Mount Crosby Water Treatment Facility remains safe for consumption and normal use. These compounds are eliminated throughout the treatment process, but occasionally, they may temporarily influence the flavor and present an earthy or grassy scent directly from the tap.   

Individuals who are particularly sensitive to flavors might notice this, and during this phase, we suggest cooling the water may aid in diminishing any earthy flavor in the tap water. 

Seqwater’s operations are conducted around the clock to facilitate the movement of significant volumes of water across the SEQ Water Grid to assist with the flow and enhance the flavor; we have also ramped up monitoring of the water catchment and throughout the treatment processes. 

Urban Utilities and Logan Water will maintain close collaboration with Seqwater to keep customers informed. 

Some areas of Redlands Coast may also experience this temporary alteration in flavor.
