Samsung has revealed a range of new displays ahead of CES 2025, highlighting gaming and entertainment-oriented models. The standout features of Samsung’s latest collection include two newly launched Odyssey G-series gaming monitors, which allegedly boast the world’s inaugural OLED panel with a refresh rate of 500Hz.
The Odyssey G6 and G8 represent Samsung’s latest high-performance gaming screens, with the G6 offering an exceptionally rapid 500Hz refresh rate. The G8 model, known as the G81SF, is a 27-inch OLED monitor that comes equipped with a 4k panel and supports a refresh rate of 240 Hz. At 27 inches, the panel features a pixel density of 165 PPI. The G6 has a lower resolution compared to its 4k sibling, sporting a resolution of 1440p. However, this downscaled resolution offers over a 2x enhancement in refresh rate.
It should be noted that 500 Hz monitors like the AW2524HF are currently available on the market. Nevertheless, Samsung’s G6 is purportedly the first to incorporate an OLED panel.
Both displays deliver nearly instantaneous response times of 0.03ms, thanks to OLED technology, and feature variants of adaptive refresh rate technology from AMD and Nvidia (G-Sync Compatible and FreeSync Premium Pro). They also support HDR 400 True Black, providing these new G6 and G8 models with HDR functionalities in games and video content that support HDR.
At CES, Samsung will also present a 3D-oriented display called the Odyssey 3D G90XF. As its name implies, this panel is designed for 3D gaming and entertainment without the need for glasses. The Odyssey 3D employs a novel lenticular lens attached to the front panel to create the 3D effect sans 3D glasses. Additionally, Samsung has integrated AI processing in this specific Odyssey model to convert 2D videos into 3D.
Riding the AI wave, Samsung is launching a new AI-centered monitor, the Smart Monitor M9, advertising “industry-first” AI features that allegedly enhance entertainment and interactivity via intelligent AI search capabilities and customization.
This is a 32-inch 4K OLED monitor also supporting VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400, similar to its Odyssey counterparts. It includes two AI functionalities: AI Picture Optimizer and AI Upscaling Pro. AI Picture Optimizer supposedly evaluates input signals and adjusts the display’s settings to enhance the visual experience based on the content shown. This applies to games, productivity software, and videos.
AI Upscaling Pro enhances lower-resolution content to 4K. In essence, this feature resembles Nvidia DLSS but operates independently of the monitor and works with any displayed content. Samsung utilizes a neural network to elevate lower-resolution material to 4k quality.
Completing the collection is the ViewFinity S8 S80UD, a monitor optimized for productivity, showcasing an unconventional (yet sizable) 37″ screen. The type of panel has not been disclosed, but it likely employs an IPS panel, given the absence of any references to OLED technology.
It boasts a 4K 16:9 panel with 99% sRGB color accuracy. A built-in KVM switch has also been incorporated into the display, allowing users to manage multiple systems through the monitor without the necessity for various peripherals. Additionally, there’s a 90W USB Type-C connector to charge compatible devices.
