Diving Into the New Year: Swim & Dive Kick Off 2024 at the FIU Sprint Invite

MIAMI – The FIU swimming and diving team is scheduled to resume activity on Saturday, Jan. 4 hosting the FIU Sprint Invite at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center, with races commencing at 10 a.m.

The FIU Sprint Invite presents a comprehensive schedule of swim and dive events, with all 50-yard races adopting a distinctive tournament-style scoring system.
 
Competitors in the 50-yard events will contest over three rounds, culminating in a two-person head-to-head race in the final round. The 50-yard races will feature backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle disciplines.
 
American Athletic Conference (AAC) rival Tulane and Division II establishment Assumption will participate on Saturday, while Tulane and The College of New Jersey will field divers.
 
This marks the Panthers’ first competition since their home dual meet against the Marshall Thundering Herd on Monday, Dec. 16.

LAST TIME OUT
The Panthers competed against Marshall in late December, resulting in a 179-121 defeat. FIU accounted for five first-place finishes, including two relay triumphs.
 
Freshman Tawannah McLemore was the standout performer for the Panthers, achieving three top finishes. She clinched an individual victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.54 and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (52.86).
 
McLemore also played a crucial role in both relay victories. The Panthers began the meet robustly with a winning finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as McLemore collaborated with Frida Stretre Løbersli, Sally Olsson, and Jessica Shpilko to record a time of 1:45.23.
 
UP NEXT
Meet competition continues on Saturday, Jan. 25 when the Panthers head to Fort Myers to face Florida Gulf Coast. Events are scheduled to commence at 11 a.m.
