We are persistently providing assistance to individuals experiencing rough sleeping this winter.

Acknowledging the heightened risks that extreme weather conditions present, we have implemented several critical measures to ensure the safety and welfare of at-risk residents.

One such measure involves the initiation of the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) during bouts of extreme cold. SWEP is triggered when the forecasted temperature is expected to drop to 0°C or lower. It may also be activated due to other severe weather events that could create considerable health hazards, including wind, rain, heat, or snowfall, and offers emergency housing to anyone sleeping rough. This initiative guarantees that no one endures harsh weather without protection.

An alert is lodged through the platform, and details are immediately forwarded to our outreach team. Moreover, we provide a Housing Assistance Referral Portal on our website, which allows individuals to refer themselves or others for support. This portal enables the council to evaluate eligibility and deliver customized assistance, including temporary housing and help with obtaining long-term accommodation.

In 2024, rough sleeping in the district decreased to an 8-year low. On average, 1 to 2 individuals are recognized by NFDC as sleeping rough on any given night.
