Misty Mayhem: How Thick Fog Disrupts Life and Travel Across Northern India

A thick veil of fog has enveloped Delhi and nearby regions in northern India, resulting in travel disruptions and disorder.

PTI news agency reports that over 100 flights were delayed at Delhi airport on Friday morning. Additionally, numerous trains have been rescheduled or are operating late.

India’s meteorological agency has indicated that foggy conditions are expected to persist for the upcoming days.

Dense fog is typical for this time of year in Delhi and various other northern Indian areas, as the region endures a severe cold wave.

Images and videos displayed numerous cities blanketed in thick mist and haze.

On Friday morning, around nine airports, including Delhi’s, faced zero visibility, as stated by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The Delhi airport has released a notice to travelers, alerting them about significant delays.

“Although landing and take-off are ongoing at Delhi airport, flights that do not comply with CAT III may be impacted,” the airport indicated in a statement, referring to the radar system that facilitates automatic landings during extremely low visibility.

Numerous airlines have also communicated, encouraging passengers to verify flight schedules prior to making travel plans.

IMD categorizes fog as “dense” if visibility decreases below 200m and “very dense” if it drops under 50m.

The meteorological department has forecast that Delhi might experience light to moderate rainfall on January 6, which could further lower temperatures.
