Myanmar Humanitarian Insights: Navigating Challenges and Hopes for 2024-2025

KEY HIGHLIGHTS & MESSAGES

• The year 2024 has confronted individuals in Myanmar with an intensifying humanitarian crisis, highlighted by escalating demands amidst ongoing conflict, recurring monsoon inundations, and unprecedented displacement, compounded by a response that remains underfunded.

• The clashes involving the Myanmar Armed Forces (MAF) along with various ethnic and opposition groups have continued in Rakhine, the Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast. Consequently, the total figure of internally displaced persons (IDP) has surpassed 3.5 million by the close of 2024.

• Civilians are encountering significant protection threats, severe food instability, the near breakdown of essential public services, and economic disruptions that are heightening inflation and causing loss of livelihoods.

• Humanitarian collaborators assisted almost 3 million individuals during the initial three quarters of 2024, with expectations to reach approximately 3.9 million people by the end of the year, despite barriers to access, amid an operation that is critically underfunded.

• Humanitarian agencies in Myanmar continue to confront a variety of hurdles in their efforts to deliver aid to the vulnerable populations served through the clusters, primarily concerning access, logistics, resources, and security. Initiatives strive to attain better access to those in need.

• By 31 December, the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) was only 36 percent funded, severely impacting the capabilities of humanitarian partners to provide aid to prioritized individuals needing urgent assistance.

• The humanitarian requirements of the population are surging to unparalleled levels in Myanmar, with projections estimating 19.9 million individuals requiring aid in 2025. The 2025 HNRP has been initiated, aiming to deliver life-saving support to 5.5 million people in 2025, for which US$1.1 billion is necessary.
