The South Western boys’ and girls’ swim teams embarked on the 2024-25 season with ambitions for the York-Adams Division I championship. The Mustangs’ journey has begun impeccably.

Both teams secured a home triumph over Red Lion on Thursday night in Hanover; the boys dominated 144-39, while the girls achieved victory at 136-48. Each South Western team won all 12 events, improving their overall record to 5-0 and beginning division competition with a 1-0 record.

The boys’ team was spearheaded by a trio of senior swimmers, each winning two individual races. Sean Filipovits secured the 200 IM (2:07.11) and 100 butterfly (53.35); Spencer Wineholt clinched the 200 free (2:00.90) and 100 free (52.70); while Owen Cromer took home victories in both the 50 free (22.25) and 500 free (5:07.24). The Mustangs also achieved a clean sweep in the relays, with additional individual wins from Ryan Knox (100 back), Eli Cross (100 breast), and Isaiah Smith (diving).

On the girls’ side, Chloe Albrecht prevailed in the 200 free (2:07.97) and 100 fly (1:08.04); Laney Yard triumphed in the 200 IM (2:34.19) and 500 free (6:18.21); while Audrey Wright clinched first in the 50 free (27.13) and 100 back (1:11.77). Further victories were registered by Elise Leonard in the 100 free, Miranda Knight in the 100 breast, and Kendall Moul in diving.

The Red Lion girls recorded a 2-1 (0-1) record, while the boys fell to 0-3 (0-1). Megan Hennessy topped the girls’ team by finishing second in the 200 free and 100 breast, whereas Braden Guth placed second in the boys’ 50 free and 100 breast.

Spring Grove joined South Western in leading both divisional standings with wins by both the boys’ and girls’ teams at Central York. Dallastown and Northeastern will commence their D-I seasons on Tuesday.

Red Lion 55, Hempfield 41: In Hempfield, the Lions (11-0) led by a score of 41-33 entering the fourth quarter, pulling away to secure the non-league victory on the road. Julia Sedora recorded a game-high 20 points; her teammate Bekah Sedora contributed 12; and Reagan Smith added 11 points with an impressive 9-for-10 performance at the free-throw line.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

West York 52, Penn Manor 47: At Penn Manor, the Bulldogs (7-3) held a 30-14 lead at halftime and were up 43-30 after three quarters, managing to fend off a comeback to claim the non-league road victory. Chase Cristofoletti led the West York scoring with a game-high 13 points, which included three 3-pointers. His teammate Grady Hoffman chipped in 10 points.
