Syracuse Stumbles Against Thirteenth-Ranked Georgia Tech

Georgia Woolley scored 22 points, but the Syracuse women’s basketball squad (6-7, 0-2 ACC) lost to No. 13 Georgia Tech (15-0, 3-0 ACC), 85-68, in their opening match of 2025 held at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta.

HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED

Syracuse surged ahead early against the Yellow Jackets with a 10-1 spurt to start the game, yet the home side countered with a 15-6 advantage over the last seven minutes of the first quarter, evening the score at 16 as they headed into the second quarter.

Georgia Tech seized its first advantage of the match at the beginning of the second quarter, utilizing a 28-15 scoring edge during that period to establish a 44-31 lead at halftime.

‘Cuse stayed competitive in the third quarter, trailing by just one point, but Georgia Tech upheld a 65-51 margin heading into the final quarter of play.

An 11-0 surge showcased the Orange’s efforts in the fourth quarter, but it proved insufficient as they concluded the game with a score of 85-68.

GEORGIA SHINES EARLY

Georgia Woolley commenced the game impressively, netting 16 points in the first half and ending with a game-leading 22 points. This marked her second performance with over 20 points this season and the seventh time she has topped the team’s scoring chart.

The senior was also proficient in other areas, recording a season-high eight rebounds and three assists for ‘Cuse.

NOTABLE POINTS

• Kyra Wood performed admirably despite early foul difficulties, concluding with 12 points and seven rebounds. The senior has now crossed the double-digit scoring threshold in seven games this season.
• Angelica Velez brought energy off the bench for the Orange, contributing eight points and four assists in 15 minutes.
• Sophie Burrows matched her season best with eight rebounds in the defeat while also recording six points and two assists.
• ‘Cuse ended the evening with a 87 percent shooting rate from the free throw line, marking their third instance this season with at least 80 percent from the foul line.
• The Orange secured 42 rebounds in the loss, just one less than the Yellow Jackets. Syracuse’s 22 defensive rebounds limited Georgia Tech to a mere nine second-chance points.
• Syracuse’s record now stands at 6-7 for the season.
• The Orange currently hold a 6-7 all-time series record against the Yellow Jackets.
