HONOLULU—The women’s tennis squad of the University of Hawai’i inaugurated the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational on Friday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Bows are contending with intense competition against  #9 UCLA and #10 California during this weekend. All the Rainbow Wahine who participated today engaged in both singles and doubles matches to commence the three-day tournament.

In doubles, Hawaii’s Peppi Ramstedt and Sheena Masuda teamed up to overcome Cal’s pair of Katja Wiersholm and Naomi Xu, 6-2. Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova faced stiff resistance against the seventh-ranked UCLA pair of Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle, but narrowly lost, 6-3.

In singles play, UH’s Makeilah Nepomuceno fought valiantly, succumbing to Cal’s Naomi Xu in a challenging match that concluded with two tie-breaker sets, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3). UH’s Emma Forgac lost to the Bruin’s Olivia Center in a three-setter, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Sheena Masuda also put up a fight but was defeated by Cal’s Tiziana Schomburg, 6-3, 6-4.

The Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational proceeds on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
