Jones and Mitchell Ignite Marquette’s Bold Victory Over Creighton, 79-71

MILWAUKEE – The No. 8/8 Marquette University men’s basketball squad triumphed over Creighton on Friday evening, 79-71, in front of a full house at Fiserv Forum, improving to 4-0 in BIG EAST competition.

The Golden Eagles (13-2, 4-0 BIG EAST) were spearheaded by Kam Jones, who recorded 22 points (15 in the second half), nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Stevie Mitchell contributed with 18 points (14 in the first half), six rebounds, and two assists.

Creighton netted the initial seven points of the contest before Marquette embarked on a 10-0 surge. The Bluejays established their largest lead of the match with 2 minutes and 55 seconds remaining in the first half at 35-27, but MU responded with a 12-0 run to lead by four at halftime.

The Golden Eagles commenced the second half with a 14-3 burst, extending their advantage to 15 at the 15-minute mark. Kam Jones and Stevie Mitchell accounted for 16 of Marquette’s 26 points during the 26-3 stretch.

The Bluejays responded with a 15-3 rally over the subsequent four minutes of play, narrowing the gap to three at the under 12 timeout. Marquette restricted Creighton to merely 3-of-13 shooting in the last eight minutes of the contest. Kam Jones and David Joplin scored 15 of Marquette’s last 17 points.

Creighton (9-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) was led by Ryan Kalkbrenner, who amassed 16 points and 12 rebounds.

NOTABLES:

• This marks the second occasion in program history that Marquette has begun 4-0 in BIG EAST play. The team started the 2012-13 conference season 4-0 on their way to a 14-4 overall record and a share of the regular-season title.
• This is the ninth instance this season MU has recorded 10 or fewer turnovers in a game. The Golden Eagles ranked third in the nation with an average of 8.9 turnovers per game coming into the contest, finishing with seven tonight.
• Kam Jones achieved his seventh game of the season with 12+ points, 5+ assists, and 5+ rebounds.
• Stevie Mitchell reached double figures for the fourth consecutive game.
• Mitchell had his eighth game of the season with 3 or more steals.
• Marquette recorded its third sellout of the season, including the students-only event on Nov. 11 at the Al McGuire Center. Tonight’s attendance of 17,756 marks the 10th largest crowd for MU at Fiserv Forum.
