Trending Baby Names of 2024: A Tie for the Top Spots Unveiled!

For the fifth consecutive year, Oliver and Isla have secured the number one position, while Noah advanced to a tie for first place from second (which he occupied for five years since 2020) and Charlotte leaped from fourth place in 2023.

The last occurrence of a tie for the top position was in 2018 when Charlotte and Ava both claimed first place.

For Oliver, this marks the 10th occasion in 11 years that the name has led the boys’ list.

Amelia, in second position, narrowly missed creating a three-way tie for the most popular girl’s name, registering just one less than Isla and Charlotte.

New entries into the top 10 list for 2024 compared to the previous year include Oscar, Violet, Ivy, and Isabella, with Isabella making a meteoric rise from 20th position in 2023.

In 2024, there were 30,825 births officially recorded in WA.

Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages Alison Jackson noted that there is considerable interest in popular baby names each year, and the Registry offers the most reliable data, as it captures every birth registration application across the State.

“This year saw the launch of online birth registrations, an option that parents have embraced extensively,” Ms Jackson remarked.

“Since the online portal was introduced in May, the Registry has received over 14,500 digital birth registration applications,” she stated.

“Current data shows that nearly 90 per cent of parents are opting for the online method, rather than sending or submitting paper registration forms at the Registry.”

Ms Jackson mentioned that regional data showcases distinct trends, with different names occupying several top positions.

“For example, in the Goldfields-Esperance region, Ethan and Harper ranked first, while Mia was the most favored girl’s name in the South West/Great Southern and Levi was the top boys’ name in Peel,” she explained.

Families have 60 days from a child’s birth to submit their registration to the Registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages.
