The major snowball fight in D.C. is celebrating its 15th anniversary, and naturally, Monday’s commemoration wouldn’t be complete without a tussle in the chilly precipitation.
In previous years, hundreds have gathered in various parks across D.C. to engage in snowball skirmishes.
A winter storm is expected to deliver up to six inches of snow in certain areas of D.C. on Monday.
“Residents in D.C., as we’ve discovered over the years, relish the chance to literally let off some steam, racing around on a snow-covered field and breaking a sweat tossing snowballs,” stated Michael Lipin, cofounder of the D.C. Snowball Fight Association. “It’s enjoyable at any age.”
The snowball conflict has reached its 15th year, and the anniversary festivity is certainly not complete without a battle in the chilly precipitation.
The skirmish is set for 11 a.m. on Monday at Meridian Hill Park, situated north of the White House.
“It’s very casual,” Lipin mentioned. “We refer to ourselves as an association, but, you know, this is an organization that exists only in our minds and on social platforms, and it survives because people love to unite.”
Participation in the battle is free — no tickets or cash are required. You just need to arrive and start hurling.
He noted that the group appreciates if attendees RSVP on its Facebook page to gauge the number of participants, although it’s not mandatory.
“The joy comes from witnessing people smiling and laughing uproariously. The grown-ups, the children, and the dogs scampering about. People bring their pets, and some don costumes, quite humorous ones,” Lipin remarked. “In fact, those individuals are some of the real stars of the events, as they become the targets.”
He encouraged everyone to maintain the playful spirit by practicing safe snowball pitching.
“We always aim to motivate participants to play safely and not to throw ice, but just to have fun,” Lipin stated. “It never gets stale.”
