I’m not a fan of photography resolutions. I struggle to maintain them, particularly the photo-a-day challenges. I resemble a 100m sprinter participating in a marathon – excelling for a few weeks, only for my initial excitement to diminish.

It seems I’m once again setting myself up for disappointment, but I have additional motivation to enhance my picture-taking resolve in 2025 after observing a troubling pattern in my photography journey last year: indifference.

Capturing images for work presents no issue. I frequently evaluate the best cameras for TechRadar and must utilize them adequately to form my evaluations. I’ll be photographing everything from football players with professional cameras to portraits using the latest mirrorless models.

However, in 2024 I truly did not take many photos outside of work, and that needs to transform. I do not want the creative fire within me to extinguish entirely.

So how do I plan on eradicating apathy and reversing the situation this year? Learn from 2024, which has shown me that it’s essential to change the tools I use.

Maintaining a camera in my pocket

In 2024, I typically used my phone for taking pictures instead of a specialized camera, and most of those images were practical: managing life tasks, receipts, brief videos of family moments, and so forth.

For me, my smartphone does not foster photographic creativity, even in situations where it ideally should. I’m much more inclined to capture a quick family shot with it than invest time in crafting the moment for the best possible photograph, as I do with a genuine camera.

It’s apparent to me that to revive my creative vision for personal projects, I must utilize a dedicated camera more frequently – and I purchased the Ricoh GR IIIx in 2022 specifically for this purpose. It’s a compact camera offering superior image quality and usability compared to smartphones.

Upon acquiring the GR IIIx, I established a photo-a-day objective but ultimately fell significantly short of completing the year-long challenge. I gathered a wealth of knowledge throughout the experience and documented my insights in an article reflecting on that year.

I’m not particularly imposing a photo-a-day challenge on myself again – experience has taught me better. However, my aim is to rediscover the joy and also desire to create images once more.

A recent excursion with my old point-and-shoot verified how significantly more pleasurable a camera can be for photography than a smartphone, thus a compact camera will be my preferred tool again.

In 2024, I transitioned my GRIIIx from my pocket to my bag on days when commuting. With it stored away, the prevailing mindset for its utilization became ‘just in case’ – there’s the indifference – rather than a declaration of intent to unleash creativity, akin to when it previously resided in my pocket.

Therefore, 2025 will mark the year that my point-and-shoot – whether it’s the Ricoh GR IIIx or the classic Sony Cybershot RX100 – regains its rightful place in my pocket. Being more readily accessible, I am confident that I will use it more frequently, and my artistic vision will flourish.
