STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Individuals of all ages gathered at El Centro del Inmigrante in Port Richmond on Saturday to observe Three Kings Day, alternatively referred to as Dia de Reyes Magos.

This custom occurs at the conclusion of the Twelve Days of Christmas and celebrates the occasion when, according to the scriptures, three wise men first beheld the infant Jesus and presented him with gifts.

With assistance from Rev. Terry Troia, president and CEO of Project Hospitality, along with Michelle Molina, executive director of the center, youngsters adorned their crowns with vibrant artwork intended for the celebration.

Fauzia Syed arrived early, aiding Thiago Bejavano, 8, in adorning a vibrant red royal cloak, while Rev. Troia engaged with Eimy Bejarano, 6, as she decorated her crown.

Francesca Gallelli, Staten Island Regional Representative for the Governor’s Office, was present to assist with a toy distribution event sponsored by Governor Kathy Hochul.

Natalie Muniz, a 12-year-old pupil at the Marsh Avenue School for Expeditionary Learning, volunteered to lend a hand and stated, “I’m pleased to have the chance to express my gratitude for what I possess and share the joy I experience when I unwrap my gifts. I feel everyone deserves the same chance.”

Rev. Terry Troia articulated that “This event was initiated in 1997 by the late Denis P. Kelleher. After his passing five years ago, Javaid Syed has continued the tradition of celebrating the Three Kings Festival here in Port Richmond. A Catholic family initiated this, and a Muslim family has upheld it, showcasing the universality of what is sacred in our shared humanity.”

Javaid and Fauzia Syed, proprietors of all Burger King and Popeyes locations on Staten Island, brought their children and grandchildren to assist in serving the meals they contributed.

The kids savored dishes from Burger King and Popeyes. The Syeds also offered traditional Pakistani cuisine for the adults, featuring a rice dish, meatballs, and a unique egg preparation.

Javaid remarked, “God has favored us, so it is our duty to give back to the community, particularly to those in need, such as the homeless and underprivileged, hence our presence here to support them.”

He brings along his children and grandchildren with the intention of instilling the tradition in them. “I aim to pass the torch to my kids so they can elevate my legacy and consistently give back to the community,” he mentioned.

Amna Akhtar, his daughter, revealed that her children have been contributing since a young age. “My father holds the belief that the more you give, the more blessings you shall receive from God. This has indeed been our family’s experience.” The family also supports the Poor People’s Dinner.

Michelle Molina, executive director of El Centro del Inmigrante, stated that the celebration is an essential tradition in their culture. She stressed the significance of passing it on to future generations, explaining, “It’s for the children and a foundational part of our religious beliefs. It defines who we are.

The offspring of our workers come from very low-income backgrounds. Today, they don the attire of kings in honor of Three Kings Day. We aspire for them to feel regal, recognizing their worth and that they are treasured in God’s sight.”
