CATALDO — The Panhandle Nordic Club enjoyed an abundance of fresh snowfall during their annual Best Hand Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Fundraiser this Saturday.

A multitude of participants of various ages gathered to share their passion for snow activities, relishing the freshly prepared trails at the Fourth of July Pass Recreation Area.

Participants gathered poker cards from event organizers as they navigated the roughly 5-mile loop. Later, they exchanged the poker hands for prizes from local businesses.

“It’s wonderful to simply be outdoors,” remarked participant Jeff Kyle, with his infant, Liv, safely strapped to him.

The fundraiser supports the PNC’s ongoing management of the recreation area each year. This partnership with the Coeur d’Alene River Ranger District has been ongoing since 1988. Additionally, the group raises funds through grants and parking permit fees.

In addition to maintaining the area’s trails for snow activities, PNC volunteers assist with the removal of fallen trees and the upkeep of equipment throughout the year.

For PNC members, this fundraiser signifies more than just financial contributions; it’s about building connections.

“One of our objectives is to teach individuals the technique of cross-country skiing,” noted long-time member John Lee.

“It’s all about the connections we establish, the joy and conversation we share,” added Susan Lee.
