It wasn’t too chilly for a snowball skirmish.

With daytime temperatures hovering in the low-20s on Saturday, Jan. 4, neither children nor their parents were deterred from enjoying the winter scenery surrounding Butler. This marked the first significant snowfall this winter suitable for sledding and crafting snowmen.

Martin Furman, residing roughly a block away from Father Marinaro Park, escorted his son, Ezra, to the hillside along Zeigler Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

“Last time we had some snow, I believe it was earlier in December, we attempted to go sledding near the storage units by McQuiston Elementary, but conditions were lacking. This is the first occasion this winter it’s been ideal,” Furman remarked.

The McKeevers made the most of the snow-blanketed hill by going sledding. Parents Amy and Isaac McKeever took their daughters, Phoebe, aged 5, and Lydia, 3, sledding near Father Marinaro Park. After a few runs with her father, Phoebe enjoyed some solo rides on the sled.

Nearby, Devin Rodgers pushed his 8-year-old daughter, Sophie Rodgers, on a sled, both warmly bundled up to withstand the cold breeze.

Numerous parents at Father Marinaro Park expressed that they hadn’t had the opportunity to take their children sledding in a considerable amount of time, given the series of mild winters in recent years.

“No, we haven’t ventured out much; there hasn’t been much snowfall. We had this sled for an entire year before we were able to utilize it,” shared Shane Stone, who was relishing the hills of Marinaro Park with his three kids.

Whether in a front yard or one of the various parks throughout Butler, children frolicked in the snow all day long. Nadal Jackson was seen playing with his sisters, Maisie and Milani Myland, outside their residence on Saturday. The family’s trampoline served as the main arena in the snowball conflict, with siblings bouncing around to evade being hit.

Butler experienced treacherous conditions on Friday, leading to school cancellations and reduced visibility. The National Weather Service previously informed the Butler Eagle that residents should brace themselves for a second storm arriving Sunday evening.
