KEARNEY – The Kearney Planetarium at the University of Nebraska is presenting a collection of intriguing shows this semester, allowing visitors a closer view at the marvels that exist beyond our planet.

Facilitated by faculty of the UNK Department of Physics and Astronomy, the “Astro Friday” series delves into the enthralling past of the stars, planets, and galaxies that constitute our universe, while addressing several prevalent cosmic inquiries. This semester features three new show themes.

Scheduled “Astro Friday” events for the spring semester entail:

  • 7 p.m. Jan. 10 – “Astronomy, Astrology and Ancient Cultures,” presented by Professor Adam Jensen
  • 8:15 p.m. Jan. 10 – “Fermi’s Paradox: If We’re Not Alone, Where Is Everybody?” presented by Jensen
  • 7 and 8 p.m. Feb. 7 – “A History of Galaxies,” presented by Associate Professor Joel Berrier
  • 7 and 8 p.m. March 7 – “A Tour of the Planets,” presented by Assistant Professor Brandon Marshall
  • 7 p.m. April 11 – “Science or Fiction? Debunking Common Astronomical Misconceptions,” presented by Jensen
  • 8:15 p.m. April 11 – “Is Pluto a Planet?” presented by Jensen
  • 7 p.m. May 2 – “Element Factories in the Stars: The Synthesis of the Chemical Elements,” presented by Associate Professor Jeremy Armstrong

Entry to the planetarium presentations is complimentary; however, attendees must reserve a ticket at https://www.ticketleap.events/events/unk-planetarium. Tickets will become available one week prior to each show. Walk-ins are permitted if space allows.

The UNK Astronomy Club will provide telescope observing sessions alongside the shows in February, March, and April, contingent on weather conditions.

Located within the Bruner Hall of Science on campus, the UNK Planetarium is accessible and can accommodate one or two wheelchairs per performance.
