Governor Moore Takes Action: Maryland’s Statewide Shutdown and Emergency Declaration Before Winter Storm Hits

“Ensuring the safety of Marylanders is our highest concern. Please refrain from traveling during this storm. Prepare your household and family and keep your communication devices charged in case of power outages,” stated Gov. Moore. “I have enacted an executive order to declare a State of Emergency and instructed the Maryland Department of Emergency Management to collaborate with the Maryland Department of Transportation, State Police, and all state agencies. The State of Maryland will also be closed on Monday, January 6. Please—restrict travel, pay attention to local weather forecasts, and remain safe.” 

Snow is predicted to commence in western Maryland on Sunday evening, January 5, continuing through Tuesday morning, January 7. The snowfall is expected to be most substantial after midnight on January 6. Regions situated within the storm’s most intense section may experience accumulation of 8”-12”, with 1”-2” potentially falling each hour. Risks from the storm are heightened due to persistently low temperatures and windchill. Major dangers involve icy roads, frozen pipes, and severe cold. 

State and local government representatives are also coordinating resources for preparations. State and county emergency operations centers have elevated their activation levels throughout Maryland, with the Maryland Department of Emergency Management transitioning to full activation on January 6. The State Highway Administration and the Maryland Transportation Authority have finalized pretreating roads.
