KDOT Issues Travel Warnings as Blizzard Sweeps In!

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Department of Transportation recommends that all drivers refrain from non-emergency travel, particularly in northeast and northcentral Kansas, as perilous blizzard conditions continue.

All state highways in Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Doniphan, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Atchison, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Jefferson, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Douglas, Johnson, Lyon, Osage, Jewell, Republic, Washington, Mitchell, Cloud, Clay, Lincoln, Ottawa, Ellsworth, Saline, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, McPherson, Marion and Chases counties are shut, including Interstate 70.

Drivers currently in impacted areas are urged to modify their travel arrangements without delay.

“This is a significant, statewide winter weather occurrence,” said Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “We value the public’s compliance in avoiding the roads so our teams can prioritize reopening routes as swiftly and safely as possible. KDOT is actively engaged in these difficult conditions.”

KDOT teams are attempting to clear roadways, focusing on major corridors first. Progress will be contingent on the prevailing weather.

KDOT also advises travelers to keep emergency kits readily available, containing clothing, blankets, food, water and additional necessities.
