KENT — Despite the absence of two of its current state champions, the Toppenish girls wrestling squad is not to be overlooked.
The Wildcats demonstrated this on Saturday, outpacing 75 other squads to clinch the Gut Check Invite title thanks to an individual victory by Adalyne Montiel at the Accesso ShoWare Center.
Montiel, one member of Toppenish’s returning state champion trio alongside Sophia Torrez and Makayla Torres, achieved three pins and a major decision to advance to the finals in the 110-pound class. She subsequently triumphed over Skyler Hall from North Medford (Ore.) with a 9-5 decision for the title.
Toppenish’s Sara Ortega (135) also made it to the finals but was pinned by North Medford’s Sadie Hall, while Jade Johnson secured third place at 100 pounds.
Granger secured fourth overall as a team, benefitting from individual titles by Kiara Torres (100) and Malia Riojas (105).
