Amazon‘s Ring is collaborating with fire safety product manufacturer Kidde to introduce a connected smoke alarm, which the company revealed on Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The companies aim to release Kidde smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that incorporate Ring’s home security technology and can send alerts to the Ring mobile application. The Kidde Smart Smoke Alarm with Ring will be priced at $54.97, while the Kidde Smart Smoke and CO Alarm with Ring will be available for $74.97. Both items are set to ship in April.

As part of the rollout, Ring will also offer a $5-per-month subscription service that provides users with access to round-the-clock professional monitoring and emergency dispatch services.

Amazon purchased Ring in 2015 for a reported $1 billion. The home security business is chiefly recognized for its video doorbell devices, which enable users to record activities occurring in front of their residences, although it has broadened its range of products to include everything from camera-equipped floodlights to aerial security camera drones.

Amazon does not reveal unit sales for its Ring division, but according to data from market research firm Parks Associates, Ring and competing home security company SimpliSafe account for one-fifth of the U.S. market for professional monitoring systems. Ring CEO Liz Hamren, who succeeded founder Jamie Siminoff in March 2023, informed Bloomberg in May that the company has “recently” achieved profitability.

Users are not obligated to subscribe to Ring Home, the company’s program that allows for video recording storage and additional security functionalities, in order to utilize the new smoke alarm service.
