Understanding Travel Advisories: Who’s Affected and What It Implies

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Numerous “states of emergency” and travel advisories have been declared in our Tri-State regions.

So what does this signify?

In Indiana, travel advisories come in various levels.

A red advisory represents the highest tier and indicates the following:

Travel is limited to emergency management personnel only. In a “warning” local travel advisory, individuals are instructed to:

• Avoid all travel;
• Follow necessary emergency procedures;
• Assist public officials and disaster service teams in executing emergency operation plans; and
• Adhere to and comply with the lawful orders of properly identified authorities.

Currently, Vanderburgh, Warrick, Gibson, Spencer, Dubois, and Perry Counties are at a red alert level.

Posey is at a yellow level, which indicates:

Conditions pose a threat to public safety. Under a “watch” local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as commuting to work or in case of emergencies, is advised, and businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations should implement emergency action plans.

Numerous individual counties and municipalities have also declared states of emergency.

This is done to activate the response and recovery of disaster emergency plans, authorize assistance, and to issue travel warnings.

In Kentucky, Governor Beshear announced a state of emergency prior to the storm.
