BJS Publishes the Juveniles Charged in Adult Criminal Courts, 2014 Report

The Bureau of Justice Statistics, within the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, has today released Juveniles Charged in Adult Criminal Courts, 2014. This document outlines cases lodged in adult criminal courts regarding individuals aged 12 to 17 and provides statistical data on the demographic attributes of these juveniles.

Utilizing the Survey of Juveniles Charged in Adult Criminal Courts, which was carried out by BJS with assistance from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, this report analyzes data from 23 states where juveniles faced charges in adult criminal courts during the period from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2014. It centers on the 23,553 cases where the most serious charge was identified at the time of arrest and case resolution. The report encompasses cases brought before adult criminal courts involving juveniles at various points in the judicial process: the most severe charge at arrest, method of resolution, case outcome, and sentencing. Furthermore, it includes statistics regarding the demographic characteristics of these juveniles.
