OLED is rapidly emerging as the leading display technology for high-end gaming PCs, following recent advancements in the last few years regarding OLED and QD-OLED alternatives among premium gaming monitors – and there’s an unexpectedly alluring new option on the horizon, although it’s not technically a monitor. However, it is OLED, and it’s optimized for PC gaming.
The LG M5 OLED TV has recently been unveiled, and not only does it feature the specifications that PC gamers seek – 4K, 144Hz, VRR with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync compatibility – but it additionally provides wireless connectivity between the television screen and an external connection unit, enabling you to position your PC and TV farther apart, thus allowing impressive placement flexibility.
Picture this: at your gaming setup, you have your conventional gaming monitor. But occasionally, you want to enjoy gaming on the sofa with the larger display – in the case of the M5, the wireless unit is also part of your desktop arrangement, allowing you to access all your gaming libraries on your large screen, with all your preferred settings saved. Your PC functions as both a PC and a console due to the wireless Zero Connect unit. Could the LG M5 be the ultimate TV for PC gaming?
An abundance of specifications and flexibility
Let’s clarify one point – the LG M5 OLED isn’t the first to introduce the wireless technology that PC gamers will adore. That distinction belonged to the M5’s predecessor, the LG M3. That model also provided 4K resolution, high frame rates with VRR, Nvidia G-Sync, and AMD FreeSync support, along with the Zero Connect box, which is a wireless connection hub for all external devices, transmitting the signal to the television itself, leading to a mostly cable-free experience (albeit a power cable is still needed for the display).
However, according to LG, the way in which the LG M5 surpasses its forerunner lies in the placement freedom of the Zero Connect box. LG has guaranteed that the Zero Connect on the M5 will be ‘visually lossless’ and ‘truly wireless,’ no matter where the M5 and Zero Connect Box are situated. The M4’s Zero Connect Box required direct line of sight, which meant that obstacles could interfere with signals, but the M5 is reported to possess significantly greater flexibility in its placement options while still maintaining effectively no latency.
Thus, while the LG M3 and M4 televisions may not have been ideal for every setup, the M5 should offer the adaptability for you to quietly place the box out of sight while still enjoying its wireless benefits.
Ideal timing for the Nvidia RTX 5080
Nvidia is renowned for producing some of the finest graphics cards available, with the RTX 4060, 4070, and 4080 all making our selections for the best graphics cards. AMD has had a solid year, but any time a new Nvidia graphics card is mentioned, it garners attention.
Thus, it comes as no surprise that a recent leak of what purportedly are images of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 has sent the PC community into a buzz, with many speculating that an announcement is on the verge of happening – potentially even as early as CES 2025. This timing could be ideal for the LG M5 OLED. Since it is an Nvidia G-Sync certified wireless TV, it should be a match made in heaven for the Nvidia RTX 5080.
One point to keep in mind – none of this will come at a low cost. While PC gamers anticipate spending a large amount on top-quality gear, the LG M5 OLED is set to be positioned at the higher end of the OLED television market. Although we do not have specific pricing for the M5, the LG M4 launched with an approximate price tag of €5,000 / $4,499 / £3,799, a significant increase over the LG G4, so it’s reasonable to expect the LG M5 to have a similar or even higher price tag.
Nevertheless, if you are in search of the premium PC gaming experience with an OLED TV, the M5’s enhanced Zero Connect flexibility over the M4 could render it the ideal companion for PC gamers. Just imagine not having to rearrange your PC setup!
