Be beach-wise this summer!

It’s well-known that we cherish our beaches. Throughout the 2023-24 year, 1.2 million South Australians above 16 frequented our coast an average of 2.8 times each month.

But while a beach day is among our preferred methods of enjoyment, it’s vital to honor the ocean while relishing it.

The statistics are concerning: There were 15 coastal fatalities in South Australia in the 2023-24 season – nine due to drowning. This represents an increase of eight percent over the 10-year average.

Members of Surf Life Saving SA conducted 86 rescues and provided 550 first-aid treatments during the same timeframe.

Thus, whichever SA beach you visit this summer, it is essential to prioritize safety and responsibility.

Key tips for safety

Here are some key tips to keep in mind:

1. Always keep an eye on children near water.

2. Acquire swimming, water safety, and lifesaving techniques.

3. Always wear a life jacket when boating, rock fishing, or using watercraft.

4. Swim at a monitored beach between the red and yellow flags.

5. Avoid swimming after consuming alcohol or drugs.

6. Always swim with a companion.

7. Look for information signs at the beach entrance regarding local conditions and potential hazards.

8. Be sun-aware: Slip on a shirt, apply 50+ sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat, seek shade, put on sunglasses – and download the SunSmart app.
