CHICAGO (Jan. 7, 2025) – Head coach Emma Hayes of the U.S. Women’s National Team has selected a 26-member roster for the training camp kicking off the year, scheduled from January 14-21 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

While a training camp was not conducted at the onset of 2024, the January training camp has consistently been part of the USWNT calendar for many years. This week’s training in January will not feature any international matches; however, it will occur simultaneously with a 24-player Futures Camp, showcasing promising USWNT talents. That roster will be unveiled tomorrow.

The roster for the USWNT January training camp does not include any players based in Europe, as the camp is scheduled outside an official FIFA international window. Furthermore, the renowned “Triple Espresso” forward trio of Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson will be absent as they continue with their off-season recovery from injuries. Midfielder Rose Lavelle, who recently had ankle surgery, will also opt out. With only 11 of the 22 members from the 2024 gold medal-winning Olympic Team present at the camp, opportunities arise for other athletes. Consequently, Hayes has summoned six uncapped players who will participate in their inaugural senior team training camp and a total of 13 players who hold three or fewer caps.

“We aspire to nurture an atmosphere and culture within the National Team that is centered around the players and female athletes, supporting them in realizing their full potential,” stated Hayes. “Providing constructive growth experiences with the USWNT will benefit their careers and aid in developing a larger player pool. I am genuinely eager to hit the field with these athletes and those in the Futures Camp to enjoy a productive week of training with both groups without needing to alter our loading and training plan due to match considerations. I can hardly wait.”

U.S. Women’s National Team Roster by Position (Club; Caps/Goals) – 2025 January Training Camp

GOALKEEPERS (4): Angelina Anderson (Angel City FC; 0), Claudia Dickey (Seattle Reign FC; 0), Mandy McGlynn (Utah Royals; 1), Casey Murphy (North Carolina Courage; 20)

DEFENDERS (9): Tierna Davidson (NJ/NY Gotham FC; 65/3), Crystal Dunn (NJ/NY Gotham FC; 155/25), Naomi Girma (San Diego Wave FC; 44/2), Alyssa Malonson (Bay FC; 1/0), Tara McKeown (Washington Spirit; 0/0), Jenna Nighswonger (NJ/NY Gotham FC; 18/2), Emily Sams (Orlando Pride; 2/0), Emily Sonnett (NJ/NY Gotham FC; 103/2), Ryan Williams (North Carolina Courage; 0/0)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Sam Coffey (Portland Thorns FC; 28/1), Savannah DeMelo (Racing Louisville FC; 7/0), Hal Hershfelt (Washington Spirit; 3/0), Nealy Martin (NJ/NY Gotham FC; 0/0), Ashley Sanchez (North Carolina Courage; 28/3), Ally Sentnor (Utah Royals; 2/0), Jaedyn Shaw (San Diego Wave FC; 21/8)

FORWARDS (6): Ashley Hatch (Washington Spirit; 22/5), Emma Sears (Racing Louisville FC; 3/1), Ella Stevens (NJ/NY Gotham FC; 0/0), Alyssa Thompson (Angel City FC; 13/1), Morgan Weaver (Portland Thorns FC; 2/0), Lynn Williams (Seattle Reign FC; 75/21)

Fourteen players who accompanied the USA to England and the Netherlands for the last two matches of the 2024 season are included in this lineup.

Six-foot-one goalkeeper Casey Murphy (28 years old), now the most seasoned player among the USWNT goalkeepers with 20 caps, returns to the squad. With the retirement of Alyssa Naeher, the trio comprising Angelina Anderson (23) from Angel City FC, Mandy McGlynn (26) from Utah Royals, and Claudia Dickey (25) from Seattle Reign FC completes the goalkeeper selection. The 5-foot-9 McGlynn earned her first and only cap on October 30, 2024, against Argentina, securing her first shutout, while 6-foot Anderson and 5-foot-11 Dickey will be making their debut at senior team events.

Defender Crystal Dunn makes a comeback to the camp after sitting out all of the fall fixtures and is the most capped player on the roster with 155 appearances for the USA. Defender Emily Sonnett (103) and forward Lynn Williams (75) follow closely in terms of caps, with central defenders Tierna Davidson (65) and Naomi Girma (44) also among the top. No other player on the roster exceeds 28 caps, which is also the total number of appearances for midfielders Sam Coffey and Ashley Sanchez.

This training camp will pave the way for the 2025 SheBelieves Cup, set to occur during a FIFA window, allowing all European-based players to be available for selection. During the 2025 SheBelieves Cup, the top-ranked U.S. Women’s National Team will host Japan (#7 in the current FIFA Women’s World Rankings), Australia (#15), and Colombia (#21) as the tournament reverts to its usual six-game, three-matchday format after being conducted in a four-game, two-date format last year due to the new FIFA scheduling in years featuring the Olympic Games.

The schedule entails the USA beginning the tournament against Colombia on Thursday, February 20 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston (7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET on TBS, Max, and in Spanish on Universo and Peacock), while Japan will compete against Australia at 4 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. ET (Max, Universo, and Peacock). The teams will then progress to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where the USA will face Australia on February 23 at 3 p.m. MT / 5 p.m. ET (TBS, Max, and in Spanish on Universo and Peacock), with Colombia playing Japan at Noon MT / 2 p.m. ET (Max, Universo, and Peacock). The final two matches will be held at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego on February 26, featuring the USA against Japan at 7:30 p.m. PT / 10:30 p.m. ET (TBS, Max, and in Spanish on Universo and Peacock) and Australia facing Colombia at 4:30 p.m. PT / 7:30 p.m. ET (Max, Universo, and Peacock). Tickets can be purchased from ussoccer.com.

Additional Observations:

  • All 26 players originate from the NWSL, representing 11 different clubs, led by NJ/NY Gotham FC with six players. The Washington Spirit and North Carolina Courage each have three players.
  • The roster includes two 2024 NWSL Best XI First Team players, Jenna Nighswonger and Emily Sams, the latter also being the league’s Defender of the Year, as well as three 2024 NWSL Best XI Second Team honorees, Naomi Girma, Tara McKeown, and Hal Hershfelt.
  • Among the six uncapped players, all are receiving their first call to the USWNT – goalkeepers Angelina Anderson and Claudia Dickey, defenders Tara McKeown and Ryan Williams, midfielder Nealy Martin, and forward Ella Stevens – four have prior experience with U.S. Youth National Teams. For Martin and Williams, this marks their first National Team event at any age level. All six have earned recognition on NWSL fields during the past year.
  • Martin notably stepped in as a goalkeeper on two occasions for NJ/NY Gotham FC, the latest being in the 2023 NWSL Championship Game when fellow January camper Mandy McGlynn was sent off in the closing moments of the match. Martin donned the goalkeeper jersey and helped maintain the lead until the final whistle.
  • Anderson served as the starting goalie for the USA at the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, playing all 270 minutes of the tournament. Anderson and McGlynn were together on the…USA’s 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Team in France, but neither participated in any matches.
  • The 2020 U-20 World Cup cycle concluded unexpectedly due to the COVID-19 outbreak, yet Dickey competed in four contests at the 2020 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, aiding the USA in securing the regional crown.
  • Forward Ella Stevens represented the USA at the U-17, U-19, U-20, and U-23 tiers. She was part of the squad that claimed the 2015 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, netting a goal in that tournament against Haiti. Stevens recorded seven goals in 2024 for NJ/NY Gotham FC, tying with Rose Lavelle for second on the team.
  • McKeown also was included in the USA’s 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Team and played the entire match against Paraguay. Emily Fox, Savannah DeMelo, Ashley Sanchez, Girma, and Sophia Smith were also part of that World Cup team.
  • DeMelo and Sanchez, both participants in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Team, are back on the lineup. Sanchez last represented the USA on Oct. 20, 2024, against Argentina, but before that, she hadn’t played for the USA since Oct. 29, 2023, versus Colombia. DeMelo’s latest appearance also took place at the end of 2023, against China PR on Dec. 2 of that year.
  • The 26-player roster has an average of just 23 caps per athlete. There are merely three individuals on the squad aged 30 or above – Crystal Dunn, Lynn Williams, and Emily Sonnett – while the majority of the group is in their 20s. Williams netted the decisive goal in the USA’s last match of 2024, a 2-1 win against the Netherlands in The Hague, marking the 21st goal of her international career.
  • Six athletes on the roster achieved their first USWNT caps in 2024: McGlynn, defenders Alyssa Malonson and Sams, midfielder Hershfelt, and forwards Emma Sears and Ally Sentnor. Sears scored (and provided an assist) during her debut on Oct. 27, 2024, against Iceland.
  • Similar to what Alyssa Thompson accomplished two years earlier, Sentnor made her entrance in front of over 76,000 fans at a sold-out Wembley Stadium in London. Sentnor’s debut occurred in the USA’s penultimate match of 2024 on Nov. 30.
  • Portland Thorns FC forward Morgan Weaver returns to the lineup for the first time since 2021. She earned her first two and so far only caps on a trip to Australia to conclude that year. Due to injury, she missed a portion of the 2024 season but still managed to score four goals for PTFC.
  • Washington Spirit forward Ashley Hatch, with 53 career NWSL regular season goals and 63 in total competitions, receives her first call-up since late 2023 when she last represented the USA on Dec. 5, 2023, against China PR. She netted seven goals (second on the team) and provided three assists for the Spirit in 2024.
