Abstract

Abstract
Background
By 2023, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are projected to be a leading cause of mortality globally. A successful method for the prevention and management of NCDs involves the implementation of lifestyle intervention programs that promote health. Self-efficacy is a significant element related to the adoption of practices that support health. This review intends to investigate the influence of self-efficacy in encouraging health-promoting lifestyles among individuals suffering from NCDs.
Method
A systematic review of literature was carried out across three academic databases—Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science—looking specifically for original articles published in English from 2015 to 2024 that recognized health-promoting lifestyle as an outcome measure. The quality of the selected articles was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tools, and the results were compiled through content analysis.
Results
The preliminary search yielded 308 citations. Ultimately, eight studies that fulfilled the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools criteria were included, emphasizing the direct impacts of self-efficacy. Results demonstrated that self-efficacy positively predicts overall health-promoting lifestyle as well as the physical activity aspect among patients with NCDs—including those diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular issues, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and early-stage cancer.
Limitation
All selected studies utilized a cross-sectional design. Consequently, the quality of evidence was comparatively low and presented a high risk of bias. Moreover, there was a language limitation as only publications in English were chosen.
Conclusion
The outcomes of this review will assist healthcare practitioners in boosting self-efficacy, an essential positive predictor of health-promoting lifestyles among patients with non-communicable diseases. This strategy can be integrated into clinical consultations and intervention programs. More research is needed to assess the effectiveness of self-efficacy in enhancing a health-promoting lifestyle.
