A man was apprehended on Monday after being caught photographing the Ram temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya with sunglasses containing a camera, breaching the no-photography and videography policy at the sacred site that was built following years of legal disputes.
The individual, known as Jani Jaikumar from Vadodara in Gujarat, successfully navigated through several checkpoints along the Ram Janmabhoomi route and arrived near the Singhdwar of the temple complex on Monday, as reported by news agency PTI officials.
According to police, Jani Jaikumar is said to be a businessman.
Security personnel at the Ram temple observed a light flickering in his sunglasses and reacted swiftly, they mentioned.
“He was seen capturing images with the camera-integrated glasses, which drew the attention of security staff when the camera light illuminated,” police stated.
SP (Security) Balramachari Dubey remarked that the glasses, which feature cameras on either side and a button for image capture, are worth several thousand rupees.
“The individual was promptly taken into custody after the suspicious device was found. The glasses, which have cameras on both sides and a button for taking pictures, are valued at around ₹50,000,” SP Dubey stated.
Dubey added that Anurag Bajpai, an SSF soldier who detained the individual, will receive recognition for his alertness.
“The quick intervention of the security watchman prevented any additional security breach,” he remarked.
The Ram temple or Ram Mandir in Ayodhya was accessible to the public on January 23 of last year, the day following its consecration ceremony, which was officiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The temple’s construction was the result of years of legal contention that concluded in 2019, with the Supreme Court ruling to assign the disputed territory for the establishment of a Hindu temple, while providing a nearby parcel of land to Muslims for a mosque.
The Babri Mosque, which formerly occupied the site where the temple now stands, was demolished on December 6, 1992, by a large gathering of ‘kar sevaks’ who asserted that a temple had been destroyed centuries prior to construct a masjid.
The Supreme Court’s judgment was based on a report from the Archaeological Survey of India, indicating the presence of a non-Islamic structure beneath the demolished mosque.
For security purposes, photography and videography within the temple premises are prohibited.
