The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Jewel Miah, expressed gratitude to the local communities, emergency responders, and various organizations for their collaborative efforts in addressing the flooding within the borough over the recent days.

Cllr Miah stated that the initiative will persist in aiding communities affected by the floods.

Cllr Miah remarked: “It is heartbreaking to witness the impact of flooding on individuals’ homes and businesses, and my thoughts are with all those affected.

“I want to commend local communities for their solidarity during these challenging times. I have been present in the borough and observed residents assisting one another, showcasing the remarkable community spirit that thrives in Charnwood.

“The Council has been diligently collaborating with other organizations including the fire brigade, police, county council, and others to address the floods and support the community. This collaboration will continue.

“We established two rest centers in Barrow and Loughborough to support those who had been evacuated; fortunately, these facilities are not needed at this moment. We are vigilantly monitoring the situation and keeping it under assessment.

“We have provided temporary emergency accommodation for several individuals, and I encourage anyone whose home has experienced flooding and has nowhere to turn to reach out to the Council.

“Additionally, officers will be visiting the flood-affected areas to provide support and collect information.

“Our contractor for open spaces has been engaged in clearing water channels on Council-owned land and distributing sandbags to those who are most at risk.

“Our partnership with other agencies will continue in the forthcoming days.

“Undoubtedly, the prevention and management of flooding is a joint responsibility of multiple agencies, and we must also consider the severe weather we have encountered along with the exceptionally high-water levels.

“I urge individuals to heed the guidance and advice shared by various agencies concerning safe travel and actions to take if their property becomes flooded.”
