Authorities reported on Sunday that the remains of a photographer who disappeared along the Oregon coast three weeks prior have been located.

Joseph Neill was discovered after personnel at Clausen Oysters farm notified law enforcement around 9:30 a.m. regarding “a potential deceased individual found in Haynes Inlet” during the receding tide, stated the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies retrieved the remains, which were subsequently confirmed to be Neill. The tide had carried Neill approximately 1.5 miles upstream from a railroad bridge that crosses Coos Bay at Jordan Point, where his personal possessions were initially discovered on December 15 – the same day Neill reportedly departed his home to capture photographs of the king tides at Horsefall Beach and failed to return.

A Facebook page devoted to locating Neill, named “JoeStrong,” shared that he was “pushed significantly inland due to the high tides when he stumbled.”

One of Neill’s children characterized him in another Facebook entry as “a survivalist” who “could create anything necessary to navigate a challenging situation if required.”

Neill’s family expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the search through a post.

“We thank you for the support you’ve all shown us and the committed search efforts over the past three weeks,” the post stated.

The family’s establishment, The Electric Hospital, remained closed on Monday “as a day of mourning for our cherished Dr. Joe,” according to their post.

“Please show kindness to our staff, who were like a second family to him,” the post mentioned. “They will reopen on Tuesday, just as our dad would have done; please feel free to stop by and don’t hesitate to mention his name. He’s constantly on our minds, so acknowledging him is something we all appreciate.”
