Sharma and Gaylord Shine as SCIAC’s Star Athletes of the Week in CMS Swim & Dive

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Annika Sharma was named the SCIAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week while Cyrus Gaylord was awarded the SCIAC Men’s Diver of the Week for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving program, as announced by the conference office today. 

Sharma contributed to four victories, comprising two individual and two relay events, leading the Athenas to a win over Occidental by a score of 239-53. Meanwhile, Gaylord secured first place in the one-meter dive and second place in the three-meter dive as the Stags triumphed with a score of 224-72. 

Sharma’s individual victories came in the 50 free and the 200 back. She claimed the 50 free in 24.87, outpacing her competition by just over half a second (.53), and later won the 200 back with a time of 2:09.90, surpassing her closest rival by 3.47 seconds. Additionally, she began the meet by aiding in a winning 200-yard medley relay and concluded by swimming the second leg of the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay. 

Gaylord achieved an impressive score in the one-meter dive, recording a 352.70, which surpassed his previous season-high by nearly 50 points. He also finished 34.45 points ahead of teammate Jack Griffith, who took second place. In a tighter contest, Griffith secured the three-meter win over Gaylord, with Gaylord’s score of 278.10 being just 8.2 points shy. 

CMS will return to competition this week when the divers travel to California Baptist for the Lancer Diving Invitational on Thursday. The swimmers will face California Baptist in a distance meet at home on Friday, followed by the Athenas and Stags competing again at Axelrood Pool on Saturday for a SCIAC double dual against Cal Lutheran and La Verne.
