Tampa, Fla. – Jan. 6, 2024 – The South Florida women’s basketball team (10-6, 3-0 AAC) travels to the Sunflower State for a contest against Wichita St. (7-9, 1-2 AAC) at Charles Koch Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. EST and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
 
SETTING THE SCENE
The Bulls are aiming for their sixth consecutive triumph and their fourth straight win in conference play. The Shockers have won one of their last four contests and hope to extend their ongoing win streak to two.
 
THE SOUTH FLORIDA-WICHITA ST. RIVALRY
Wednesday marks the thirteenth encounter between these two teams. South Florida has a 9-3 historical advantage against the Shockers. The most recent matchup was a 69-62 victory for the Bulls in the AAC Tournament (Mar. 10, 2024).
 
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BULLS
The Bulls are spearheaded by graduate guard Sammie Puisis (15.9 ppg.). Puisis ranks 5th in the country for total 3-pointers made with 51 and 8th in 3FG Made Per Game (3.19 3FGM). Junior forward Carla Brito boasts a team-leading 7.2 rebounding average (7th in the American). Graduate guard Mama Dembele is USF’s leading playmaker with 5.1 assists per game (totaling 81 assists, ranked 21st nationally). According to the latest NCAA Nitty Gritties Report, South Florida is rated 8th in NET SOS and 65th in the NET rankings.
 
ADDITIONAL INSIGHTS
In the past four seasons, USF has achieved a record of 58-4 (.935) when scoring 65 points or more. This is tied for the seventh-best record in Division I during that period (since 2021-22). Romi Levy has achieved multiple steals off the bench for three consecutive games, the longest streak by a USF player since Shalethia Stringfield did it in January 2016 (also three). The most recent South Florida player to accomplish this at least four times in a row was Jasmine Wynne in 2008-09 (four games). The Bulls have commenced their conference schedule with a 3-0 record for the third time in the last five seasons (also in 2022-23 and 2020-21). This represents the most such starts for any AAC team in that timeframe. Sammie Puisis is one of only two DI players this season with at least 50 successful three-pointers and a free throw percentage of 90.0. The other is Lauren Ross from Purdue Fort Wayne. Against Temple, Carla Brito became only the second USF player in the last 25 seasons to achieve at least 10 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and zero turnovers in one game. The only other player to do so was Courtney Williams on November 25, 2015 against Butler.
