Stay Alert: Travel Advisories Persist Amid Hazardous Road Conditions

Emergency responders are advising you to refrain from traveling on local roads, indicating that access is restricted to emergency personnel solely due to a current red travel alert.

Bartholomew County alongside all adjacent counties are under a red travel alert including Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, and Shelby counties. Under a red travel alert, authorities state that you should adhere to essential emergency protocols, collaborate with public officials and disaster management services, and follow the directives of officers.

Columbus law enforcement indicates that side streets remain heavily snow-laden, as do numerous parking lots. Since 6:30 this morning, officers have responded to over 50 requests for aid from motorists, primarily for vehicles ensnared in the snow. Bartholomew County Emergency Management highlights that drifting snow is covering roads just as swiftly as teams can clear them.

The red travel alert remains in effect until further notice.

Columbus Transit has also halted service for the day due to the road conditions.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis predicts that an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow and a light layer of ice may occur, with winds gusting up to 40 mph.
