AUSTIN (KXAN) — Thursday marks the day Central Texas encounters its rain, and possibly, for some, a wintry mix. The regional forecast indicates primarily rain, but KXAN meteorologists are not discounting the possibility of freezing rain, drizzle, or sleet in certain areas, mainly within the Hill Country.

This forecast is derived from the real-time data currently being assessed. Precipitation is expected to commence on Wednesday evening and continue into Thursday morning. Air temperatures are predicted to drop to the upper 20s to low 30s. Any rainfall that occurs could freeze upon contact in locations where temperatures are under freezing. Day Temperatures for Thursday are projected to stay above freezing universally, leading to consistent rain.

What’s the situation in Dallas? Fans will be traveling north on Interstate 35 to witness Texas compete against Ohio State in Friday evening’s Cotton Bowl Classic.

The outlook for Central Texas has modified, though the expectation for Dallas-Fort Worth remains unchanged. The Metroplex forecast now has DFW under a Winter Storm Watch from Wednesday evening to Friday morning. Rain will transition into a wintry mix from Wednesday to Thursday morning. Certain roadways may become icy should this forecast accuracy hold true.

Precipitation transforms into snow throughout the afternoon on Thursday, particularly Thursday night extending until Friday morning. The snowfall may be substantial at times. Snow accumulation of three to six inches seems probable based on current observations. This expectation applies to areas situated north of Interstate 20. This is our expectation of what will occur.

The forecast becomes somewhat complicated regarding temperatures. Daytime temperatures in that area are not expected to rise significantly above the mid-30s. Therefore, while there may be rain, most of the precipitation will likely be snow.

So, when is the best time to travel? The general consensus is that travel conditions will begin to worsen throughout Thursday. TxDot and local authorities will ensure that major highways remain safe, but secondary and lesser roads may become hazardous.
