Recent findings from the University of Liverpool demonstrate how accelerated reproductive ageing in females (such as premature puberty or early menopause) correlates with mental health difficulties.

This new research expands upon prior studies in animals that indicate reproductive hormones assist the brain in managing and safeguarding itself against stress. Investigators from the Institute of Population Health, along with partners from Monash University, Australia, University of Melbourne, Australia, and Yale University, North America, have recognized individual variances in functional brain organization in humans which connect quicker reproductive ageing—an indicator of increased biological wear and tear—with heightened stress sensitivity.

The team examined spontaneous brain activity and connectivity patterns while participants were at rest. Reproductive ageing was gauged through parental reports of pubertal timing during adolescence and self-reported reproductive cycle attributes in middle age. All participants’ exposure to stress and sensitivity were evaluated through self-reported instances of pain and hostility from others.

The research revealed that early puberty at ages 11-12 was associated with more irregular functional connectivity patterns in brain regions linked to memory, imagination, vision, and focus. Connectivity patterns in the brain related to early puberty coincided with areas connected to psychosis susceptibility. Additionally, middle-aged women (aged 36-60 years) who transitioned towards menopause more rapidly than anticipated based on their chronological age exhibited more erratic functional connectivity patterns, suggesting premature ageing, in sectors involved in memory and attention. Brain patterns associated with early menopause also overlapped with areas linked to major depressive vulnerability.

Psychology lecturer, Dr. Raluca Petrican, who led the research stated: “Our study indicates that quicker reproductive ageing influences brain function in manners that could amplify sensitivity to social stress, with variations based on age, thus likely resulting in unique mental health challenges during adolescence compared to middle age. In adolescents, the delayed maturation of stable functional brain organization tied to early puberty may elevate psychosis risk. For middle-aged individuals, early menopause is correlated with a swifter decline in stable functional organization in regions associated with visual processing and goal-oriented attention, potentially increasing depression risk by restricting their ability to strategically interact with the external world and manage stressors effectively.

“This research signifies a critical advancement in comprehending the complex interplay between reproductive ageing and mental health in females across various life stages and may guide more tailored mental health interventions for women.”

The paper, ‘Functional Brain Network Dynamics Mediate the Relationship between Female Reproductive Aging and Interpersonal Adversity’, was published in Nature Mental Health (DOI: 10.1038/s44220-024-00352-9).
