Capture Magic: OnePlus 13 Unveils Stunning Hasselblad Camera for Photography Enthusiasts

Following a series of previews, OnePlus has officially launched not just the flagship OnePlus 13 smartphone but also the OnePlus 13R, a cost-effective option. Both models highlight photography capabilities and have been developed in collaboration with the renowned camera manufacturer Hasselblad.

OnePlus 13: A Chic Flagship Featuring a Dynamic Camera System

The OnePlus 13 is powered by the rapid Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform, the most robust Snapdragon to date. With up to 16GB of RAM and the impressive Dual Cryo-Velocity vapor chambers from OnePlus, the OnePlus 13 guarantees class-leading speed, remarkable efficiency, and dependable performance.

While all this power is impressive, mobile photographers are eager to learn: What about the cameras? The OnePlus 13 boasts a fifth-generation Hasselblad for Mobile triple camera system, which includes a 50-megapixel Sony LYT-808 primary camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 50-megapixel 3x Triprism Telephoto camera utilizing an AI Telephoto mode to bring the zoom up to 10 times.

“This device has also been optimized to capture stunning photos at high speeds, thanks to its Dual Exposure Algorithm, Clear Burst, and Action Mode for taking flawless images of rapid-moving vehicles, individuals, or pets,” OnePlus assures.

Delving deeper, the main camera features a Type 1/1.4 sensor combined with an f/1.6 lens. In low-light conditions, the camera utilizes pixel binning to create larger 2.24μm photosites.

The ultra-wide camera incorporates a Samsung Isocell JN5 sensor, providing a 120-degree field of view. It is a relatively compact sensor — Type 1/2.75.

The telephoto camera — the primary distinction between the OnePlus 13 and the 13R — employs Sony’s comparatively new LYT-600 sensor, a Type 1/1.95 chip. When utilizing the optical 3x zoom, photographers benefit from a 73mm equivalent focal length regarding the field of view, which is an excellent selection for portraits.

This highlights the significant extent of Hasselblad’s role with OnePlus. The OnePlus 13 comes with an enhanced Hasselblad Portrait Mode, which, similar to previous versions, can emulate the aesthetic and bokeh characteristics of iconic Hasselblad lenses such as the XCD 30 and 65 primes alongside the 90V. Three new filters are introduced, each developed to imitate classic film aesthetics.

The telephoto camera serves as the technological highlight. Traditional periscope lenses, although impressive, require considerable space to function. OnePlus labels its “Triprism” design as revolutionary, emphasizing its capability to refract light in a compact arrangement. Light reflects three times within the module, and the telephoto lens is 24% smaller and 30% lighter than conventional periscope lenses, while still maintaining a reasonably bright f/2.6 aperture and incorporating optical image stabilization.

Moreover, the OnePlus 13 introduces an array of innovative photo functionalities, including what OnePlus refers to as the “Dual Exposure Algorithm.” This is set to “transform” burst photography, making it easier to capture sharp images of swift action. To activate this feature, photographers simply press and hold the phone’s dedicated shutter button. Unlike conventional burst modes, which depend on a single-frame image capture, the Clear Burst in the OnePlus 13 employs the Dual Exposure Algorithm to take two images at once, ensuring that even frames from a rapid sequence exhibit HDR quality.

When HDR is unnecessary, an enhanced Action Mode promises even faster shooting rates — increasing the continuous capture from 30 to 60 frames per second.

For a considerable time, OnePlus has empowered mobile photographers with extensive control over their images, and the OnePlus 13 continues this tradition. Using thedevice’s Master Mode, individuals can modify tint, contrast, saturation, sharpness, and vignetting while also retaining command over exposure and camera configurations.

Regarding video, the OnePlus 13 is notably remarkable, as well. The smartphone captures 4K/60p video with Dolby Vision HDR. When recording video, users are free to interchange among all three of the device’s lenses, as they all can provide the same video specifications.

Sturdy Design

Thanks to its triprism lens, the OnePlus 13 boasts a slim profile. The phone measures only 8.5 millimeters in thickness and weighs just 210 grams. The device includes quad-curved glass, which means the edges are curved and more enjoyable to hold than the OnePlus 12.

The OnePlus 13 features a 6.8-inch QHD+ (3,168 by 1,440) display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The HDR display provides 1,600 nits of peak brightness during typical use and can achieve up to 4,500 nits in certain situations. OnePlus has invested considerable effort in enhancing the visibility of the screen outdoors, incorporating entirely new RadiantView technology to boost readability in sunlight. As with several recent OnePlus devices, it remains functional when wet or when the user wears gloves.

The smartphone holds IP68 and IP69 ratings. While IP68 is quite functional, implying that the OnePlus 13 can endure 30 minutes of immersion at a depth of 1.5 meters, the IP69 rating is rather uncommon for smartphones and excessive for most users. This elevated rating indicates the device can resist jets of water, including hot water. In theory, users could place the phone in an average dishwasher, and it would remain unscathed.

The OnePlus 13 is available in three color options: Midnight Ocean, Arctic Dawn, and Black Eclipse. The Midnight Ocean variant, an exquisite blue, boasts an industry-first microfiber vegan leather, which is incredibly soft to the touch and resists fingerprints and scratches. The Arctic Dawn stands out as well due to its industry-first surface-based glass coating, which promises a sparkling appearance in sunlight.
