Finland’s inaugural outdoor aquatic center, the Helsinki Municipal Swimming Stadium, welcomes the public from May to September. Although the facility no longer hosts international events, it remains a favorite among locals and draws nearly 300,000 patrons each year. Amenities feature a 50-meter pool, a diving area, a children’s pool, and a wading pool, in addition to a playground for children, a weightlifting section, two beach volleyball courts, and a basketball court. The stadium underwent significant renovations in 2013.

The Swimming Stadium, which was the venue for swimming, diving, and water polo events during Helsinki 1952, is situated just 200 meters east of the Olympic Stadium. Construction commenced in 1939, in anticipation of the 1940 Olympic Games, which were called off due to World War II. Work on the stadium resumed in 1947, and it was finished in time for the Games in 1952. The unused pools were repurposed for storing herring and root vegetables during wartime.

The Ahvenisto Swimming Pool, which hosted the swimming segment in the modern pentathlon at Helsinki 1952, is located in Hämeenlinna, about an hour’s drive north of Helsinki. Another outdoor pool, it forms part of the Ahvenisto Activity Park and is open from mid-May until the end of August. Now a designated heritage site, the pool was closed in 1985 due to inadequate funding for restoration. A preservation organization was established to gather funds for its renovation, resulting in its eventual reopening in 2014. Three years later, it received the title of Finland’s Sports Center of the Year from the Ministry of Education and Culture.
