Liam Payne passed away on 16 October after plummeting from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires

The medical cause of death for singer Liam Payne has been officially determined in a UK inquest opening as “polytrauma”.

The One Direction icon succumbed on 16 October following a fall from the third-floor balcony of a Buenos Aires hotel.

Polytrauma refers to various traumatic injuries experienced by an individual’s body and organs.

During the hearing at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on 17 December, it was indicated that it might take “some time” to officially determine how the 31-year-old met his demise.

The inquest regarding Payne’s death in the UK has been postponed until a pre-inquest review on 6 November, according to the coroner’s court.

Dr. Roberto Victor Cohen confirmed that the medical cause of death was “polytrauma”.

It was also relayed during the hearing that Payne was officially identified “with the help of the funeral directors in Buckinghamshire”.

Senior Coroner Crispin Butler commented during the proceeding: “While investigations are ongoing in Argentina regarding the events of Liam’s death, which I have no legal authority over, it is expected that obtaining the necessary information to clarify the circumstances of Liam’s passing may require some time through the formal process of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.”

Five individuals in Argentina have been accused in relation to the 31-year-old star’s passing.

The manager of the hotel, Gilda Martin, along with receptionist Esteban Grassi and Payne’s companion Roger Nores face charges of manslaughter, according to Argentina’s prosecutor’s office.

Ezequiel Pereyra – who was also employed at the hotel – and Braian Paiz, a waiter, have been charged with drug distribution.

‘Multiple trauma’

In November, Argentina’s prosecutor’s office reported that toxicology assessments indicated the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescribed antidepressant in Payne’s system.

A post-mortem examination classified the cause of death as “multiple trauma” and “internal and external hemorrhage” due to the fall from the hotel’s balcony.

Medical evaluations also suggested that Payne may have fallen while in a state of semi or fully unconsciousness.

The prosecutor’s office indicated that this negated the likelihood of a conscious or voluntary action by Payne, concluding that the singer lacked awareness of his actions.

Payne rose to become one of pop’s most recognizable figures after featuring on The X Factor and achieving fame with the boyband One Direction in the 2010s, until the group entered an indefinite hiatus in January 2016.

The singer’s memorial service took place in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in November.

His former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik were amongst the attendees, along with Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy and his ex-partner Cheryl, with whom he has a son.
