COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State swimming and diving teams are grieving the passing of former head swimming coach Dick Sloan, who died last month at the age of 88.

“Coach Sloan is one of the genuinely nice individuals in our field,” remarked Ohio State Director of Swimming and Diving Bill Dorenkott. “He dedicated over 25 years to our sport, leaving behind a legacy of meaningful connections and fond memories. His former athletes regard him with great respect as a coach, companion, and guide. He always generously shared his time and insights during our conversations. Buckeye Nation is thankful to consider Coach Sloan one of our own.”

Sloan directed the Ohio State swimming program from 1976-89. During his leadership, Sloan’s swimmers claimed eight individual Big Ten championships. He mentored four All-Americans and two national U.S. Swimming title-holders.

Between 1987-98, Sloan acted as the special assistant to the Director of Athletics at Ohio State. In this capacity, he aided in managing events and facilities, such as camps, concerts, and athletic team practices.

Sloan commenced his coaching journey as an assistant at Illinois from 1962-66. He then coached at Lakewood High School from 1966-68 before taking on the role of head coach at Kenyon from 1968-75, where he guided Kenyon to seven Ohio Conference championships.

Sloan was a three-year letterwinner in swimming at Monmouth College, where he also earned letters in football and tennis.

Sloan and his spouse, Diane, retired to Southport, N.C., where he continued coaching at Brunswick Community College.
