About Dave Watling:

Dave has perpetually been intrigued by cameras and photography. His initial experience was with a Kodak 110 Instamatic, and he constantly attempted to make it perform feats beyond its capabilities. On vacations, he pondered, “should I bring ONE roll of 36 or two”. The expense was a barrier for a 12-year-old. Naturally, when he developed and printed the film, he would end up with perhaps half a dozen satisfactory images. Fast forward several decades and the advent of digital technology has entirely shifted his outlook. Currently, Dave utilizes his Canon R6 Mark II along with his new RF100-300 2.8L lens.

Since the age of 5, hockey has played a significant role in Dave’s life, establishing itself as his primary passion. Over a decade ago, he volunteered to photograph some “red carpet events” for the local Junior A team, believing he had a “respectable” camera. Since that moment, it has been an ongoing journey of acquiring knowledge, equipment, and development. Dave has a love for all sports and has captured images for The Hockey News Magazine, Special Olympics Alberta, The Canadian Press, Spartan Races International, Mudgirl Run International, various online publications, and has served as an accredited AJHL photographer as well as a salaried photographer for the Calgary Canucks Team.

Dave has also taken photos of numerous current NHL stars and rising prospects, including Cale Makar, Logan O’Connor, Connor Bedard, Gavin McKenna (projected first overall for the 2026 draft), and Landon DuPont (who earned WHL’s second Exceptional Status, following Connor Bedard).

The thrill of capturing an athlete in the midst of a skillful move captivates him, and knowing someone takes pleasure in that image is the highest praise for him. Dave’s aspiration is to become an NHL photographer and, ultimately, an Olympic Photographer.
