Potsdam, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming squads faced off against the host Clarkson University Golden Knights and Potsdam Bears on Tuesday.
The Hawks secured second place behind Clarkson for both the men’s and women’s competitions. The Golden Knights triumphed over SUNY New Paltz in the men’s event with a score of 189-47 and 157-76 on the women’s side, whereas the Hawks bested Potsdam 276-98 and 137-58, respectively.
SUNY New Paltz commenced the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-meter medley relay, as the team comprised of Sage Vadney, Brianna Law, Candela Sandoval, and Molly Snyder registered a time of 2 minutes, 18.99 seconds, approximately four seconds behind Clarkson.
Antonio Vavalle earned second place in the men’s 800-meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 9:21.46, while the Golden Knights’ Casey Everet took first in 9:10.73. Vavalle also achieved a second-place finish in the 400-freestyle (4:23.05). Snyder and Law secured third and fourth places, respectively, in the 50-meter freestyle with times of 31.06 and 31.26, while Paul Caster finished third on the men’s side with a time of 25.70.
Law earned second place in the 200-individual medley (2:46.18), trailing behind Clarkson’s Fiona Reilly (2:37.46), with Hawks Sandoval and Chloe Jeffares following closely with times of 2:47.37 and 2:49.41, respectively.
Snyder recorded a second-place finish in the 100-butterfly, clocking in at 1:16.17, about five seconds after the Bears’ Kenzie Cerny (1:11.55). Sophia Bucci also posted a second-place time, finishing just behind Clarkson’s Gabriela McSwieney (1:05.42) in the women’s 100-freestyle with a time of 1:09.84.
Vadney secured another second-place position, recording a time of 1:16.91 in the 100-backstroke, while Jack Wirth achieved SUNY New Paltz’s only first-place result, finishing the men’s 100-backstroke in 1:01.64, about two seconds ahead of the Golden Knights’ Mason Cartier (1:03.54).
SUNY New Paltz concluded the evening with successive second-place results in the men’s and women’s 200-freestyle relay. Abigail Keiser, Jeffares, Naomi Levey, and Erin Donovan obtained a time of 2:09.58 in the women’s event, while Diego Burgos, Wirth, Xavier Calderon, and Vavalle finished two seconds behind Clarkson in the men’s race with a time of 1:45.35.
The Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday to compete against SUNY Cortland in a dual meet commencing at 1 p.m.
